There was a demon inside of Jericho, and Jericho had admitted to killing. Not just once, but many times. He’d had the demon for years. How many murders was that? Nathanial didn’t even want to ask and yet he needed to. He needed to be sure, even though he’d never been less certain in his entire life.

“You killed Doxley.”

Jericho nodded. “Though I don’t remember doing it. The demon fever had taken hold.”

“Demon fever?”

“When she gets hungry, I become sick with fever. She can take over when I get too hot.” He spoke in a manner so matter of fact that there could be no doubting his words.

If Nathanial hadn’t have seen it for himself, what Jericho was saying was enough to get him shut away in an asylum for the rest of his life.

How much did he trust Jericho? The taste of him was still on his tongue. A moment that he didn’t want to regret, but that he was no longer sure of. Though, the attraction, and the ache to be touched, was still there.

The warning had been clear. Doxley and Jericho had clearly gotten close. Nathanial ignored the stab of jealousy that someone else got to lie in Jericho’s bed and do what he wanted to. Had Doxley not cared about his family’s name and standing? Or had he thought he’d not get caught?

Which he hadn’t. Even in death, the secret was safe. But Jericho’s was now in his hands. “Well. As I said I can’t put a demon on trial, so I guess nothing changes.”

Jericho shook his head. “Everything changes. You are the only person who knows. She wants to climb into your body to help you get Foxhall.”

“I do not want a demon.” He didn’t think he’d be able to control her the way Jericho did. His will was not that strong, as they had both just witnessed in his willingness to drop to his knees like a gutter whore. Jericho was bringing out the worst in him. Making him want what he shouldn’t. He stepped back, putting more space between them. “But I will still need your help.”

Catching Foxhall would be like trying to catch an eel with his bare hands.

“I will help. He needs to be stopped and she loves justice.”

“Does Foxhall have a demon?” Perhaps instead of hunting killers he should be hunting demons.

“No. I had hoped he would, and that no human could be so cruel without one. But his soul is like pitch.” Jericho grimaced. “He will not stop on his own.”

“Have you seen other demons?”

“I try not to look that closely at people. I don’t always like what I see.”

“So, no.” Perhaps there were no others. Part of his mind didn’t want to believe that Jericho had one. But he believed in heaven and hell and there were demons in hell so why was it not possible that Jericho was inhabited by one? Possessed. But not in the way preachers suggested possession worked.

Jericho stepped forward, but Nathanial kept the distance between them.
